From Anime News Network:
Producer Atsutoshi Umezawa (Precure franchise) said in a press release posted on Friday that the new Sailor Moon anime is not a remake. He explained, “This second anime adaptation of Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon is not remaking the previous anime, but adapting [Naoko Takeuchi’s] original manga and starting from scratch again. It is quite a project. The entire staff has been working hard to show everyone an entirely new Bishōjo Senshi Sailor Moon, so please look forward to it.”
The new anime’s director, Munehisa Sakai (One Piece, One Piece: Strong World, Suite Precure), noted a personal connection, since the first Sailor Moon anime began the same year he joined Toei Animation. He said that he never imagined that he himself would be in charge of the new anime two decades later. He remembered looking enviously at the staff who worked on the first anime, and thanked the twist of fate that brought him here. He vowed to do his best.
The new anime will begin streaming worldwide on the Niconico service in July. Yūji Kobayashi (scripts on Saint Seiya Omega, Smile Precure!) is in charge of the series scripts, and Momoiro Clover Z is performing the theme song.
Takeuchi launched the original magical girl team manga series in the shōjo monthly manga magazine Nakayoshi in 1992. It soon spawned anime, a live-action television project, musicals, and other adaptations, and it also sparked a worldwide boom. The 20th anniversary project began in 2012, and featured the first musical in eight years at the AiiA Theater Tokyo last September. Kodansha has been republishing the original manga in a complete edition since last November, and Kodansha USA Publishing’s Kodansha Comics imprint has been publishing the manga in North America.
Toei did not acknowledge the animated adaptation of BSSM in the early-to-mid 00’s. I guess they weren’t very proud of it, but Stars had excellent animation and great ratings, especially when compared to SuperS, which did the absolute worst of any of the BSSM anime apdatations due to diverting too much from the manga in ways fans did not like, namely not including the Outer Senshi, among other things.
Also, the rest of the series had very inconsistent animation quality. Even the casual viewer could easily differentiate between the different animation styles (there were the animators who drew everyone chubbier and younger looking, compared to the usual mature and super-tall style…), while Stars overall looked very good and polished. Stars also looked more like Toei’s later works and matched them in quality. Stars also tried very hard to stay accurate to the manga, moreso than SuperS, to avoid the poor ratings of SuperS. o/
Whenever they did any sort of exhibit or display relating to their various productions, BSSM Stars would be the only one to be featured. Even most of the merchandise would just be manga-based, the anime wouldn’t be acknowledged.
Hmm, all very interesting tidbits! :D I had no idea about any of this…save for the animation styles. Those were obvious. Shame they couldn’t feel that way about S as well; I think it’s one of the best seasons, if not THE best. Just as dark as Stars came to be eventually.
Thank you so much for answering <3
SUPER SAILORS GO!
did someone say uranus with pants
I’d actually originally contemplated pants for her, but ended up keeping the skirt on all of them (I made this version after seeing this reblog though).
I know this is a petty thing to think about, but my mind works like this when I’m über-busy comicking and listening to OSTs of series…
New Evangelion anime got Hikaru Utada for their theme songs.
New Sailor Moon anime got Momoiro Clover Z for their theme songs.
I gave MCZ a listen last year and no, my ears didn’t like them. I like Hikaru more, well before she sang for Evangelion. Based on what I’ve read on Wiki though, MomoClover at least apparently don’t lipsynch and are really positive and I think that’s really good in this day and age—
But yeah. This is my deep philosophical question of the day. If you like either one of them or both or neither, that’s ok, by the way! I’m just being random :P
I did this for warm up and to practice movement, like the title says. I’ve been thinking lately about Sailor Saturn from Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon a lot, and how much of an awesome character she is. That is, if she had been allowed more screen time to show it xD (She demonstrated her skills/powers in what, 3 episodes? It’s been years since I watched the series.)
I think she’d be pretty agile, almost like a gymnast, using her glaive as additional momentum for attacks. Come to think of it, she does that in the manga, right? >_>
The panels below are just how I imagined she doing one such thing. She’s in her Silver Millennium (?) version…because it’s cooler. I like one sketch enough to maybe make it full-blown finished product but that’s probably wayyy down the line/the future.
Done with a new Permawriter pen I bought to check it out. Colors overlaid in Photoshop.

Sailor Moon Super S in Paris - 06 - Sailor Team no Theme traducción (by misaki0raven)
This was the first version of Sailor Team’s Theme I heard, and for many years I thought it was the only and official version of the song. A couple of years ago I stumbled upon the real original and well, I liked it. I was disappointed that it didn’t sound as cool to me from the start as this one XD But it’s definitely still catchy.
This is one of the songs from that Sailor Moon in Paris CD I mentioned earlier.
Does anyone remember the Sailor Moon in Paris CD?
Just asking, because I’m feeling those pangs of nostalgia again listening to it…and I get sad thinking about how no one barely mentions it whenever anything SM related pops up.
I still think it’s one of the best CDs period, but I’m most likely biased.
This is another commission for Aeraellyth of her Sailor Meshia :D
